Mr. Aylward received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Kansas University in 1963 and graduated from Georgetown University Law School in 1966. While at Georgetown Mr. Aylward was selected to be, and served as, the tax law clerk at the Washington, D.C. office of Baker & McKenzie. From 1966 to 1972, Mr. Aylward was associated with the Chicago law firm of Kirkland & Ellis where he became a tax partner in January 1972. From 1973 to August 1980, he was a partner with the San Diego law firm Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye (now DLA Piper) and was the head of that firm’s tax department.

From August 1980 to June 1984, he was a partner in the San Diego law firm of Aylward, Kintz, Stiska, Wassenaar & Shannahan. As a Certified Tax Specialist, Mr. Aylward’s practice was then focused primarily on the tax aspects of business and real estate transactions. From June 1984 through June, 1988, Mr. Aylward was a principal in several land acquisition and development projects. Mr. Aylward has been a speaker at many legal seminars and programs, and was an adjunct professor of law at the University of San Diego School of Law for ten years where he taught a graduate level course in Securitized Real Estate.

In 1987, Mr. Aylward founded Strategic Property Advisers, Inc. (“SPA”), an independent, registered investment advisory firm that provides real estate asset management services and financial investment advisory services to institutional clients. Through its offices in San Diego and Washington, D.C., SPA presently serves as investment adviser/consultant and as qualified professional asset manager (“QPAM”) to various institutional clients (including 16 Taft-Hartley and Union related plans) with aggregate real estate assets of approximately $1.2 billion. Mr. Aylward, a licensed California real estate broker, is the President of SPA.

During Mr. Aylward’s 20 year career as a real estate investment manager, SPA’s clients have found Mr. Aylward’s extensive legal background in complex real estate matters and tax law as a value added component. Mr. Aylward has been able to communicate effectively with clients’ legal counsel to expeditiously resolve various legal matters involving the real estate under management.
